Iodine Supplements: Forms, Dosage, Labels, and Safety
Iodine may appear as a clearly measured nutrient, an iodide salt, a kelp or seaweed source, or a concentrated liquid. The useful comparison is the iodine amount in micrograms per full serving, not the source ingredient’s weight or a thyroid-support claim on the front of the bottle.

Overview
Iodine is essential, but more is not automatically better
Iodine is a trace mineral used to make the thyroid hormones T4 and T3. Those hormones help regulate metabolic activity and are important for normal development of the fetal and infant nervous system. 1
That essential role explains why iodine is added to iodized salt, multivitamins, and many prenatal products. It does not establish that an iodine supplement improves energy, body temperature, weight, mood, or thyroid function in a person who already has sufficient intake. Both inadequate and excessive iodine can disrupt thyroid function.
The label shows intake, not iodine status
A Supplement Facts panel can show the iodine amount and source in one product. It cannot diagnose iodine deficiency or a thyroid disorder. Individual iodine status is also difficult to infer from a single spot urine result because that measurement is mainly useful for assessing populations; repeated measurements are more informative for individuals. 1

A nutrient function is not proof of every thyroid-support promise
Meeting an identified need
Preventing or correcting inadequate iodine intake is evidence aligned. Whether a supplement is needed depends on diet, life stage, regional food practices, and clinical context rather than a universal retail dose. 1
Pregnancy and lactation
Iodine requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation, but not every prenatal product contains iodine and more is not always safer. The full prenatal formula, diet, and individual thyroid context matter. 1
Energy and metabolism
Iodine is required for thyroid hormone production, but that pathway does not make iodine a general energy or fat-loss supplement. Extra iodine has not been shown to create a predictable metabolic benefit when intake and thyroid function are already adequate.
Detox and halide claims
Claims about “bromine detox”, a universal need to displace fluoride or chlorine, or symptoms proving that iodine is working do not provide a sound basis for escalating a dose. Symptoms after a high-dose product require assessment, not a marketing explanation.
Forms and sources
Compare the iodine amount before comparing the source name
Supplements commonly provide iodine as potassium iodide or sodium iodide. Labels can also use kelp or another seaweed source, while liquid products may use Lugol’s or other iodine and iodide solutions. Iodide is readily absorbed, and iodate is reduced to iodide in the gastrointestinal tract. 1
A named source is useful, but it does not outweigh the declared iodine amount. A label that states 150 mcg iodine as potassium iodide is declaring 150 mcg of iodine, not 150 mcg of potassium iodide. By contrast, a line that lists only the salt mass or only the kelp mass does not directly disclose the same quantity.
What common source wording establishes
- Iodine, as potassium iodide
- Potassium iodide is the disclosed source. When the nutrient row gives iodine in mcg, use that iodine amount for comparison.
- Iodine, as sodium iodide
- Sodium iodide is the disclosed source. The iodine mcg on the nutrient line remains the primary amount to compare.
- Iodine from kelp or seaweed
- The botanical source is disclosed. Prefer a separate iodine mcg amount because seaweed iodine content varies substantially by species and product. 4
- Lugol’s solution or iodine drops
- Liquid concentration and serving size matter. A drop count without a clearly stated iodine amount per serving is not enough for a dependable comparison.
Read the label
Micrograms, source mass, and serving size answer different questions
The U.S. Daily Value for iodine is 150 mcg for adults and children age 4 and older. Percent Daily Value helps compare products, but it is not a personalized recommendation or an upper limit. One milligram is 1,000 micrograms, so an iodine label that switches from mcg to mg deserves immediate attention. 2

- The iodine amount, source, and Daily Value are clear. The 150 mcg is the iodine amount for the listed serving.
- Iodine, 225 mcg, as sodium iodide, 150% Daily Value
- The serving provides 225 mcg iodine. The 150% Daily Value does not by itself establish a better product or a personal need.
- Kelp, 500 mg, providing iodine, 150 mcg
- The 500 mg is kelp mass and the 150 mcg is the declared iodine amount. Those numbers are not interchangeable.
- Iodine, 1 mg
- One milligram equals 1,000 mcg. This is much larger than a typical 150 mcg multivitamin line and close to the 1,100 mcg adult upper limit before food and other supplements are counted.
A practical iodine label check
- Confirm the serving size and iodine amount per full serving.
- Check whether the unit is mcg or mg.
- Record potassium iodide, sodium iodide, kelp, seaweed, or liquid-source wording.
- Do not substitute kelp mass or total blend mass for iodine mcg.
- Review every multivitamin, prenatal, thyroid, kelp, and iodine product used.

Add every iodine source
The stack can contain iodine in several different product categories
Iodine can appear in a multivitamin, prenatal, kelp capsule, thyroid formula, and liquid product at the same time. Food and iodized salt also contribute to total intake, but they usually are not visible on a supplement label. The adult upper limit applies to total intake from food and supplements, not to each bottle separately. 1, 3

Reference values and safety
The RDA, Daily Value, and upper limit are not interchangeable
High iodine intake can cause hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, or thyroid inflammation in susceptible people. Responses vary, and people with autoimmune thyroid disease or previous iodine deficiency can react at intakes that do not affect the general population in the same way. 1
Reference values answer different questions
- U.S. adult RDA
- 150 mcg per day for adults. It is a total-intake reference for meeting the needs of nearly all healthy adults, not an automatic supplement dose. 1, 3
- Pregnancy and lactation RDAs
- 220 mcg per day during pregnancy and 290 mcg during lactation in the U.S. DRI system. These are total-intake references, not amounts to add on top of the full diet and prenatal formula. 1
- U.S. FDA Daily Value
- 150 mcg, used to calculate % Daily Value on U.S. labels for adults and children age 4 and older. It is not a safety ceiling. 2
Children have lower age-specific upper limits. Clinically directed use of higher iodine amounts is a different context and should not be converted into an everyday supplement target.
Kelp deserves extra scrutiny because seaweed species and products can differ widely. In a study of 96 commercial macroalgae products, analysed iodine per portion or daily dose varied from very low to far above upper limits, and declared values were often incomplete or inaccurate. 4
Thyroid and medicine context
High-dose iodine is not a routine thyroid or emergency supplement
Thyroid conditions and medicines change the risk
People with thyroid disease or those using antithyroid medicines should review supplemental iodine use with a clinician or pharmacist. If the product specifically provides potassium iodide, ACE inhibitors and potassium-sparing diuretics add a separate hyperkalemia concern. The relevant issue depends on the iodine form, amount, medicine, and clinical context, and a label analysis cannot clear the combination. 1
Selenium is not an automatic 200 mcg companion dose
Selenium is involved in thyroid hormone metabolism, but that does not establish a rule that every iodine supplement must be paired with 200 mcg selenium. A randomized trial in older adults with low iodine status found no synergistic thyroid effect from combining selenium with iodine. Count selenium from the full stack on its own terms. 6
Potassium iodide for radiation emergencies is a separate use
Emergency potassium iodide is a specific medical countermeasure for radioactive iodine. It protects only the thyroid, does not protect against other radioactive materials or external radiation, and should be taken only when public-health officials or a healthcare provider instruct it. 5

What is the difference between iodine and iodide?
Iodine is the nutrient name used on labels. Iodide is a negatively charged chemical form of iodine and is commonly supplied as potassium iodide or sodium iodide. Iodate is reduced to iodide in the gastrointestinal tract. For label comparison, start with the declared iodine amount in mcg.
Does 150 mcg iodine as potassium iodide mean 150 mcg of iodine?
Yes, when the Supplement Facts nutrient row states “Iodine 150 mcg, as potassium iodide”, the 150 mcg is the iodine amount and potassium iodide is the source. A separate line that lists only potassium iodide mass is a different label format and should not be treated as the same number without a declared iodine amount.
Is kelp a reliable way to compare iodine supplements?
Kelp can supply iodine, but iodine content varies widely by seaweed species and product. Prefer a label that separately declares iodine in mcg. Kelp mass alone does not tell you the iodine amount, and a label cannot confirm the measured content or contaminant profile of a batch.
What does 100% Daily Value for iodine mean?
The current U.S. Daily Value for iodine is 150 mcg for adults and children age 4 and older. A serving with 150 mcg therefore shows 100% Daily Value. This percentage helps compare labels; it is not a personalized recommendation, proof of need, or a safety ceiling.
How different are 1 mg and 150 mcg of iodine?
One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. A 1 mg iodine serving is therefore about 6.7 times the 150 mcg U.S. Daily Value and is close to the 1,100 mcg adult upper limit before food and other supplements are counted.
Do I always need 200 mcg selenium with iodine?
No universal evidence-based rule requires every iodine supplement to be paired with 200 mcg selenium. Selenium is involved in thyroid hormone metabolism, but supplementation should be considered from the full diet, supplement stack, and individual context rather than added automatically.
Does iodine protect against radiation?
Ordinary iodine supplements are not general radiation protection. In specific emergencies, officials may direct certain people to take an approved potassium iodide product to reduce thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine. It protects only the thyroid from radioactive iodine and should not be taken unless instructed.
Can a thyroid-support blend hide the iodine amount?
Yes. If iodine, kelp, or seaweed appears inside a proprietary blend with only one total blend weight, the individual iodine amount is not disclosed. Do not use the blend’s milligram total as an iodine amount.
