One current 2026 Drug Facts label for a Magnesium Citrate saline laxative declares 1.745 g of Magnesium Citrate and 290 mg of Magnesium per fluid ounce, then gives product-specific laxative directions and warnings. That presentation is not equivalent to a daily capsule serving simply because both labels say Magnesium Citrate. 3

The Magnesium amount and the citrate compound weight are not the same number

On a U.S. Supplement Facts panel, the declared Magnesium amount is elemental Magnesium, not the weight of the complete Magnesium Citrate compound. Therefore, Magnesium 200 mg (as Magnesium citrate) means the serving provides 200 mg of Magnesium from a larger amount of the citrate salt. 1, 2

Four label lines that mean different things

Magnesium 200 mg (as citrate)
The serving declares 200 mg of elemental Magnesium supplied by Magnesium Citrate.
Magnesium Citrate 2,000 mg
This is a source-compound amount unless the label explicitly says otherwise. Find the separately declared elemental Magnesium.
Magnesium 300 mg (as citrate and oxide)
The 300 mg is the elemental total. The label does not reveal how much comes from citrate when the source split is not disclosed.
Magnesium Citrate 1.745 g per fl oz
This can be Drug Facts active-ingredient wording. Read it with the stated purpose, Magnesium content, warnings, and directions.

Citrate has meaningful comparative evidence, but no universal outcome advantage

Direct human comparisons have reported higher solubility and bioavailability measures for Magnesium Citrate than Magnesium Oxide. A 60-day randomized trial also found stronger Magnesium-status responses with citrate than oxide in several measures. These studies were relatively small and mainly evaluated absorption or Magnesium status rather than the wider outcomes used in supplement marketing. 4, 5

A 2021 systematic review reached a similar broad conclusion: inorganic Magnesium formulations generally appeared less bioavailable than organic formulations, although study designs and doses varied. The review did not establish one Magnesium form as the best choice for every product, population, or clinical goal. 6

Better absorption also does not guarantee a better clinical outcome. In a 24-week randomized trial, Magnesium Citrate increased plasma and urinary Magnesium but did not improve arterial stiffness or blood pressure compared with placebo. Evidence should therefore remain attached to the exact preparation, amount, population, duration, and outcome studied. 7

How Magnesium Citrate differs from other common forms

Magnesium citrate has direct human absorption comparisons with Magnesium Oxide, but that does not create a universal ranking against every other Magnesium form. Different forms also raise different label questions.

What changes when the form changes?

Magnesium Oxide
Citrate has shown higher bioavailability measures than oxide in direct human comparisons. That difference does not make oxide useless or citrate best for every outcome.
Magnesium Glycinate
Often marketed for sleep, calm, and tolerability. Check the elemental amount and whether the product uses glycinate alone or combines multiple Magnesium sources.
Magnesium L-Threonate
Commonly positioned for cognition and brain health, with a comparatively modest elemental Magnesium amount relative to the source-compound weight.

Source transparency
