Licorice Root: Glycyrrhizin, Forms, and Label Guide
Licorice Root labels can describe dried root, powder, a ratio extract, or an extract standardized to glycyrrhizin. Check the species and plant part, amount per full serving, extract details, glycyrrhizin disclosure, directions, and whether the individual amount is hidden inside a blend. Ordinary Licorice Root is not the same ingredient as DGL.

Overview
The root amount does not reveal the glycyrrhizin amount
Licorice Root comes from Glycyrrhiza species including G. glabra, G. uralensis, and G. inflata. Supplement labels may identify the root, root and rhizome, powder, liquid preparation, or extract. Species and preparation can matter, so the complete ingredient line is more useful than the common name alone. 1
Ordinary Licorice Root contains glycyrrhizin, also called glycyrrhizic acid. This constituent drives the best-established blood-pressure, potassium, fluid-balance, and heart-rhythm concerns. A label showing 500 mg of root or extract does not automatically show how much glycyrrhizin that serving provides. 2
DGL Licorice is processed to remove most glycyrrhizin and should remain a separate ingredient. If the label says only Licorice Root or Licorice Root Extract, do not assume it is DGL.

Traditional use should not be turned into a guaranteed supplement result
Digestive support
Licorice has traditional and regulatory-monograph context for specific gastrointestinal uses. NCCIH says it remains unclear whether licorice-only products improve digestive symptoms, so a broad front-label claim is not proof that a particular supplement will help. 1, 2
Throat and respiratory support
Traditional monographs include expectorant or soothing contexts for defined Licorice Root preparations. That history does not make every capsule, tea, lozenge, or blend clinically equivalent. 1
Energy and adrenal claims
Licorice is promoted in energy and adrenal-support products, but NCCIH concludes that there is not enough high-quality evidence to clearly support Licorice Root for any health condition. Mechanism language should not be presented as a proven user outcome. 2
DGL comparisons
Evidence or directions for DGL cannot be transferred to ordinary Licorice Root. Processing changes the glycyrrhizin context, while extract type, amount, serving, and intended use may also differ. 1

Powder, extract ratio, and glycyrrhizin percentage answer different questions
The largest milligram number is not automatically the most informative label. First identify the material being weighed, then look for a concentration ratio or a separately declared constituent.
Common Licorice Root label formats
- Licorice Root powder
- The number usually describes dried plant material. It does not establish a particular glycyrrhizin amount or make the powder equivalent to a concentrated extract.
- Licorice Root Extract
- Generic extract wording shows that processing occurred, but the concentration, solvent, species, and glycyrrhizin content may still be missing.
- Extract ratio, such as 4:1 or 10:1
- The ratio describes the relationship between source material and extract under the manufacturer’s stated convention. It is not the same as a glycyrrhizin percentage.
- Standardized to glycyrrhizin or glycyrrhizic acid
- A declared percentage or milligram amount gives more direct constituent context. Read what the percentage applies to and whether the amount is stated per serving or per day.

Keep the ingredient mass, concentration, and marker in separate columns
Licorice labels can combine a plant amount, an extract amount, a root equivalent, and a glycyrrhizin percentage. Those numbers describe different things. Compare products only after identifying the basis of each number and the serving it belongs to.

These examples explain label wording. They are not dosing recommendations or laboratory results.
- Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) root powder, 500 mg
- The species, plant part, preparation, and amount are visible. The line does not disclose the glycyrrhizin content.
- Licorice Root Extract 10:1, 200 mg
- The extract mass and ratio are visible. The ratio does not by itself establish a glycyrrhizin percentage or make the serving equal to another manufacturer’s 10:1 extract.
- Licorice Root Extract, 400 mg, standardized to 10% glycyrrhizin
- If the 10% applies to the full 400 mg extract amount, the label arithmetic is 40 mg of glycyrrhizin per listed serving. This is a calculation from the disclosure, not laboratory confirmation of the finished product.
- Herbal support blend, 1,000 mg, with Licorice Root and other botanicals
- The 1,000 mg belongs to the complete blend. The individual Licorice Root amount and glycyrrhizin exposure remain unknown unless the label states them separately.
A practical Licorice Root label check
- Confirm ordinary Licorice Root versus DGL.
- Record the species and whether the plant part is root, rhizome, or both.
- Separate powder, generic extract, extract ratio, and standardization wording.
- Read the amount per full serving and then read suggested frequency separately.
- Look for glycyrrhizin or glycyrrhizic acid in milligrams or as a percentage.
- Do not treat a total herbal-blend weight as the individual Licorice Root amount.

Compare the whole stack
Licorice can appear in products that do not lead with its name
Ordinary Licorice Root can appear in digestive, throat, respiratory, energy, adrenal-support, or traditional herbal formulas. A separate DGL product does not remove the ordinary licorice exposure disclosed elsewhere in the supplement stack.
Licorice is also paired with ingredients such as Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, or Dandelion Root. Each needs its own amount and serving context. A botanical blend can be long and still leave the Licorice Root contribution undisclosed.

- Ordinary licorice versus DGL
- Keep the two identities separate instead of combining every licorice entry into one number.
- Amount and serving size
- Compare the disclosed amount per listed serving before applying product directions.
- Extract and glycyrrhizin details
- Preserve the species, powder or extract wording, ratio, and any marker percentage or milligram amount.
- Transparent formula versus blend
- A total blend weight cannot be divided equally or treated as the individual Licorice Root amount.
Amounts and glycyrrhizin
There is no universal conversion from root milligrams to glycyrrhizin
Health Canada’s current monograph separates dried root quantities from standardized products that disclose glycyrrhizin. That separation is useful when reading retail labels: root mass, extract mass, root equivalent, and glycyrrhizin exposure should not be treated as one interchangeable dose. 1
Duration also matters. The same monograph directs users to seek professional guidance for use beyond four weeks, while NCCIH warns that larger or longer glycyrrhizin exposure increases the risk of serious adverse effects. A low-looking root amount is not an automatic safety signal when marker content and total daily exposure are unknown. 1, 2
Amount questions worth answering
- Root mass or extract mass?
- A gram of dried root and a gram of extract are not automatically equivalent preparations.
- Ratio or marker?
- A 10:1 ratio describes concentration context; a 10% glycyrrhizin claim describes a declared constituent proportion.
- Per serving or per day?
- The facts-panel amount and suggested frequency answer different questions and should be recorded separately.
- Individual amount or blend total?
- When Licorice Root is inside a proprietary blend, its individual amount and marker exposure may remain unknown.
Do not use a single root-milligram cutoff as a universal safe amount. Species, preparation, marker content, frequency, duration, other sources, medicines, and personal risk factors can all change the context.
Safety and marketing limits
Glycyrrhizin exposure and duration matter more than a reassuring front label
NCCIH reports that glycyrrhizin can cause serious adverse effects, including irregular heart rhythm, particularly with larger or longer exposure. People with high blood pressure, high salt intake, or heart or kidney conditions may be more vulnerable. Interactions with corticosteroids have also been reported. 2
In a small randomized crossover trial, 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid per day for two weeks increased home systolic blood pressure in healthy adults. An earlier meta-analysis also associated sustained intake of products providing at least 100 mg per day with higher blood pressure and lower potassium. These findings do not turn 100 mg into a personal threshold or a target. 3, 4
Health Canada’s monograph says not to use ordinary licorice in pregnancy or with hypokalemia, high blood pressure, or kidney, liver, or cardiovascular disorders. It also lists heart medicines, corticosteroids, stimulant laxatives, and other products that may contribute to electrolyte imbalance. A product labeled natural, balanced, gentle, or adrenal support does not override those limits. 1

Are glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizic acid the same label marker?
They are commonly used as names for the same key licorice constituent in supplement and regulatory labeling. Read whether the label states a percentage, a milligram amount, or only the ingredient name, because those disclosures provide different levels of detail.
Is Licorice Root powder the same as an extract?
No. Powder usually represents dried plant material, while an extract has undergone a concentration process. An extract ratio can add preparation context, but neither the word extract nor a ratio alone reveals the glycyrrhizin amount.

Can I calculate glycyrrhizin from a standardized percentage?
If the label clearly states both the extract amount and the percentage that applies to it, the marker amount can be calculated from those disclosed numbers. For example, 10% of 400 mg is 40 mg per listed serving. That arithmetic does not laboratory-confirm the batch or calculate total daily intake unless the directions are also applied.
How much Licorice Root is safe?
There is no universal safe root-milligram number across powders and extracts. Risk depends heavily on glycyrrhizin exposure, frequency, duration, other sources, medicines, and personal factors. A disclosed root amount without marker information cannot be converted into a reliable personal safety threshold.
Can Licorice Root raise blood pressure or lower potassium?
Yes. Sustained glycyrrhizin exposure has been associated with higher blood pressure and lower potassium. Current official guidance gives particular caution for people with high blood pressure, hypokalemia, high salt intake, or heart, kidney, liver, or cardiovascular conditions.
Is Licorice Root proven for digestive, respiratory, energy, or adrenal support?
