The useful comparison is more concrete: elemental Magnesium per full serving, glycinate or bisglycinate wording, disclosed buffering, capsule count, surrounding ingredients, and how closely the product matches the evidence behind its claims.

Common label names include: Magnesium glycinate, Magnesium bisglycinate, Magnesium diglycinate, Magnesium glycinate chelate, or Magnesium bisglycinate chelate. Branded wording such as TRAACS® or Albion® may identify the ingredient supplier or chelate system. Magnesium Bisglycinate is a chelated Magnesium form in which Magnesium is bound with glycine. Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium Diglycinate are also widely used on supplement labels for glycine-bound Magnesium, although the exact ingredient declaration and formulation can differ between products.

Chelated Magnesium is a broader description, not another name for Magnesium Glycinate by itself. A useful label identifies the actual chelate, such as bisglycinate or another named amino-acid form.

The chelate weighs more than the Magnesium it supplies

Magnesium Glycinate is not 100% Magnesium by weight. The complete compound includes Magnesium and glycine, so a large bisglycinate number cannot be compared directly with an elemental Magnesium amount.

On a U.S. Supplement Facts panel, Magnesium 200 mg (as Magnesium bisglycinate) declares 200 mg of elemental Magnesium. The chelate required to supply it weighs more. NIH and FDA guidance distinguish the declared elemental mineral amount from the full source-compound weight. 1, 2

Buffered is not one standardized Magnesium Glycinate formula

Buffered Magnesium Glycinate is not one standardized formulation. A buffered product may contain Glycinate alongside another Magnesium source, but the word buffered alone does not identify that source or reveal how much of the elemental Magnesium each form contributes.

Adding another Magnesium source is not automatically a defect. It can change elemental yield, capsule count, cost, solubility, and gastrointestinal behavior. The problem is incomplete disclosure or marketing the whole elemental amount as though it came from bisglycinate alone.

Fully reacted and unbuffered are also supplier or product claims. They can be useful label details, but the words do not physically verify the finished product’s chelation, composition, purity, or performance.

Magnesium (as bisglycinate)
The facts panel names bisglycinate as the source. Check the complete ingredients for any additional Magnesium compounds.
Buffered Magnesium Bisglycinate
Look for the disclosed buffer or secondary Magnesium source. Do not infer oxide unless the label actually names it.
Magnesium (as bisglycinate and oxide)
Both sources are disclosed, but a combined elemental total still does not show the form split.
100% chelated or fully reacted
A manufacturing or composition claim that the label can state but cannot prove through wording alone.

A direct 2025 trial found a small benefit, not proof of the best sleep form

A 2025 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 155 adults reporting poor sleep. Participants received placebo or 250 mg of elemental Magnesium as bisglycinate daily for four weeks. Insomnia Severity Index scores improved in both groups, with a statistically greater reduction in the bisglycinate group. The between-group effect was small (Cohen’s d = 0.2), and the other measured psychological outcomes did not differ significantly. 3

The tested preparation was taken 30–60 minutes before bedtime and also supplied about 1.5 g of glycine per day as part of the chelate. The study relied on self-reported sleep measures and did not compare Magnesium Bisglycinate with citrate, oxide, L-threonate, or another active Magnesium form. That makes the result useful Glycinate-specific evidence, but not proof that Glycinate is the best Magnesium form for sleep. 3

Broader reviews of Magnesium and sleep remain mixed and heterogeneous, with differences in formulation, dose, population, and study design. They have not established the most effective Magnesium form or dose for sleep. Calm, stress, and anxiety claims need similar restraint because much of that evidence comes from other Magnesium forms or multi-ingredient products. 4, 7

Direct evidence comparing Magnesium Diglycinate with Magnesium Oxide comes from a small 1994 crossover trial in 12 people with ileal resection. Overall absorption did not differ significantly, although the four participants with the greatest oxide absorption impairment absorbed more from the chelate, and the chelate was better tolerated in that specific population. 5

That study should not be rewritten as proof that every glycinate product is better absorbed than oxide in healthy adults. A broader 2021 systematic review also found substantial variation in Magnesium bioavailability studies and did not establish one universal form ranking. 6

Serving burden

Study match

It also describes medication interactions and greater toxicity risk when kidney function is impaired. Glycinate wording does not remove those mineral-level precautions. 1

There is no established universal Magnesium Glycinate dose for sleep. The 2025 trial tested 250 mg of elemental Magnesium daily for four weeks, taken 30–60 minutes before bedtime. That study protocol is evidence about one preparation and population, not proof that 250 mg or that timing is optimal for every product or person. 3
