Omega-3 Fish Oil: EPA, DHA, Forms, and Label Guide

A 1,000 mg fish oil claim does not tell you how much EPA or DHA the serving provides. Compare the active fatty acids, serving size, chemical form, source, and quality evidence before comparing bottles.

Also listed as: fish oil, fish oil concentrate, marine oil, or omega-3 fish oil. Labels may also separately state EPA, DHA, total omega-3, or a chemical form such as triglyceride (TG), re-esterified triglyceride (rTG), or ethyl ester (EE). These terms describe different actives, totals, or forms and should not be treated as interchangeable amounts.

Fish oil is a source material; EPA and DHA are the main label actives

Fish oil supplies long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. EPA and DHA are incorporated into cell membranes and participate in lipid signaling. DHA is especially concentrated in the retina and brain, but a biological role does not guarantee that a fish oil supplement improves cognition, mood, joints, or cardiovascular outcomes. 1

Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, is a different omega-3 found in foods such as flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and some plant oils. The body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA, but conversion is limited. A label that lists 1,000 mg ALA should not be read as 1,000 mg EPA plus DHA. 1

Start on the back of the bottle

The front may emphasize “1,000 mg fish oil”, “triple strength”, or “high potency”. The Supplement Facts panel should show what one full serving provides and whether EPA and DHA are disclosed separately.

One fish oil panel can show four numbers that answer different questions

Keep each amount attached to its label line

Fish oil
The mass of the oil material in the serving. It is not automatically the EPA or DHA dose.
Total omega-3
An aggregate that can include EPA, DHA, DPA, and other omega-3 fatty acids. Do not assume its complete composition.
EPA
A separately disclosed active fatty acid. Record its milligrams per full serving.
DHA
A separately disclosed active fatty acid. Keep it separate from EPA before calculating the combined total.
Other omega-3s
DPA or unnamed residual omega-3s can explain why total omega-3 is greater than EPA plus DHA.
Serving size
Check whether the amounts apply to one softgel, two softgels, a teaspoon, or another listed serving.

Do not add total omega-3 on top of EPA and DHA

When the label says total omega-3 600 mg, including EPA 360 mg and DHA 240 mg, the total remains 600 mg. Adding all three lines would count the EPA and DHA twice.

The useful comparison is EPA plus DHA per listed serving

Consider a two-softgel serving that lists 2,000 mg fish oil, 360 mg EPA, and 240 mg DHA. The disclosed EPA plus DHA total is 600 mg per two softgels. That is 300 mg per softgel. The remaining oil mass is not automatically additional EPA or DHA.

If the directions suggest more than one serving per day, keep the amount per listed serving and the proposed daily amount as separate calculations. Also check multivitamins, prenatal products, cod liver oil, krill oil, and other omega-3 products before assuming one bottle represents the complete stack.

Read the panel in this order

1. Full serving
Confirm the number of softgels or the liquid volume used for every listed amount.
2. EPA and DHA
Add the two explicitly disclosed fatty-acid amounts. Do not derive them from fish oil mass.
3. Total omega-3
Use it as a cross-check. If it exceeds EPA plus DHA, look for DPA or an “other omega-3” line.
4. Daily use
Multiply only after the amount per listed serving is clear, then compare regular sources across the stack.

TG, rTG, and EE describe the carrier form, not a guaranteed result

Common form wording

Triglyceride, or TG
The form naturally present in fish oil. EPA and DHA concentration can still vary widely between products.
Re-esterified triglyceride, or rTG
A concentrated oil converted back from ethyl esters into triglycerides. The label should still disclose EPA and DHA.
Ethyl ester, or EE
A concentrated form in which fatty acids are esterified to ethanol. It is a legitimate form, including in prescription products.
Form not stated
The EPA and DHA amounts may be clear while the chemical form remains undisclosed. Record that uncertainty instead of guessing.

NIH notes that natural triglycerides, re-esterified triglycerides, and free fatty acids have somewhat higher bioavailability than ethyl esters, while all forms can increase plasma EPA and DHA. Short pharmacokinetic studies also show that formulation can change short-term exposure. These findings do not support a universal “70% better” rule or prove that one retail product has a better health outcome. 1 2

Form does not replace dose or evidence

A transparent EE product with clearly disclosed EPA and DHA should not be dismissed because of one acronym. An rTG claim should not excuse a low active amount, hidden serving size, or missing quality evidence.

Fish, krill, algae, cod liver, and plants are not interchangeable label categories

What changes with the source

Fish oil
Usually supplies EPA and DHA in variable concentrations. Species, source, and chemical form may or may not be disclosed.
Krill oil
Often carries omega-3s in phospholipids. Compare its actual EPA and DHA, not only the krill oil mass or absorption claim.
Algal oil
A non-fish source that often emphasizes DHA and may also provide EPA. Use the disclosed fatty-acid amounts.
Cod liver oil
Can add preformed vitamin A and vitamin D. Those nutrients must be counted across the complete stack.
Flax, chia, or perilla oil
Primarily provides ALA. Do not convert the ALA milligrams into an assumed EPA plus DHA amount.

Source wording can matter for dietary preferences, allergen context, traceability, and co-nutrients. It does not by itself prove freshness, contaminant control, sustainability, absorption, or clinical superiority. 1

One fish oil claim cannot borrow every omega-3 study

EPA and DHA supplements can lower triglyceride levels, but treatment of high triglycerides uses indication-specific doses and often prescription products under clinical supervision. This does not turn an ordinary fish oil supplement into a treatment for cardiovascular disease. 1

Cardiovascular outcome trials have not produced one uniform result. In VITAL, 1 g per day of marine omega-3 did not significantly reduce the primary composite of major cardiovascular events in a generally healthy primary-prevention population. REDUCE-IT found benefit from 4 g per day of prescription icosapent ethyl in selected statin-treated patients with elevated triglycerides. STRENGTH used a different prescription EPA plus DHA preparation at 4 g per day, found no benefit for its primary cardiovascular outcome, and reported more atrial fibrillation. 3 4 5

These trials studied different populations, preparations, doses, comparators, and outcomes. A retail fish oil label cannot inherit a prescription result because it contains some EPA, and an ethyl ester label should not be called ineffective when a specific ethyl ester prescription product has direct outcome evidence.

Translate the claim into a label question

“Heart health”
Which EPA and DHA amounts, population, outcome, and preparation support the claim?
“Brain support”
Is the claim based on DHA’s biological role, or on a trial of the exact product and relevant population?
“Inflammation balance”
A pathway or biomarker does not prove relief of pain, stiffness, or a diagnosed inflammatory condition.
“Mood support”
Do not transfer findings from a particular EPA-rich clinical intervention to every mixed fish oil supplement.

Freshness and contaminant claims need batch-level evidence

What a useful quality disclosure can include

Lot-linked certificate
A certificate should identify the finished-product batch, test date, methods, specifications, and results.
Oxidation results
Peroxide value, anisidine value, and TOTOX are laboratory measures. A label claim alone is not a test result.
Contaminant panel
Look for named tests and limits for relevant contaminants rather than a broad “purified” promise.
EPA and DHA assay
Batch testing can compare measured fatty-acid content with the label claim. NutriDetector cannot perform this measurement from a photo.
Certification
Verify a logo with the issuing program and check whether it covers the finished product, the current batch, or only a raw material.
Storage instructions
Follow the product’s temperature, light, air, and after-opening instructions. “Refrigerate everything” is not a universal label rule.

Fishy burps do not diagnose oxidation

Aftertaste and reflux can depend on the dose, meal, capsule, formulation, and person. A strong off-odor is a reason not to ignore a product problem, but taste, smell, capsule color, or a home “bite test” cannot replace laboratory oxidation testing.

Four 1,000 mg omega-3 headlines can disclose very different servings

Fish oil 1,000 mg; EPA 180 mg; DHA 120 mg

The serving discloses 300 mg combined EPA plus DHA. The other 700 mg of oil should not be relabeled as active EPA or DHA.

Fish oil concentrate 1,000 mg; EPA 500 mg; DHA 250 mg

The serving discloses 750 mg combined EPA plus DHA. Compare the serving size and form before treating this as equivalent to the first label.

Total omega-3 fatty acids 1,000 mg

This gives an aggregate but no EPA and DHA breakdown. The label is less useful for matching evidence or comparing the two main fatty acids.

Omega-3 marine blend 1,000 mg; fish oil, krill oil, EPA, and DHA

If individual amounts are hidden, 1,000 mg belongs to the full blend. It cannot be assigned to fish oil, krill oil, EPA, or DHA separately.

A stronger headline should lead to a more specific label check

Claims that need more context

“Triple strength”
Ask triple what: fish oil mass, total omega-3, EPA plus DHA, concentration, or capsule count?
“Maximum absorption”
Look for the exact form, comparator, meal conditions, preparation, and human pharmacokinetic evidence.
“Pharmaceutical grade”
This phrase does not make an over-the-counter supplement an approved prescription medicine.
“Molecularly distilled”
A processing claim does not replace lot-specific results for fatty-acid content, oxidation, and contaminants.
“Burpless”
This is a tolerability claim, not proof of freshness, purity, absorption, or effectiveness.
“Clinically proven”
Check whether the cited study used the exact EPA and DHA profile, form, dose, product, and population.

Safety depends on EPA plus DHA exposure, the person, and the complete stack

The U.S. Institute of Medicine did not establish a formal upper limit for omega-3 fatty acids. NIH reports that FDA and EFSA safety assessments found supplemental EPA plus DHA intakes up to about 5 g per day safe when used as recommended. This is a safety context, not a target, a treatment dose, or a guarantee of suitability. 1

Higher-dose omega-3 interventions have produced a small atrial fibrillation signal in some large cardiovascular trials. Fish oil can also have antiplatelet effects, although clinically important bleeding has not been consistently shown at ordinary intakes. People using warfarin or similar anticoagulants should discuss the complete EPA and DHA intake with the treating clinician and follow monitoring or procedure-specific instructions. 1 4 5

Common adverse effects are usually gastrointestinal, including unpleasant taste, reflux, nausea, discomfort, or diarrhea. Fish allergy, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a history of atrial fibrillation, upcoming surgery, regular medication use, or clinician-directed triglyceride treatment needs individualized review. Cod liver oil also requires separate vitamin A and vitamin D accounting.

A transparent omega-3 label still cannot prove the finished oil

Keep four evidence layers separate

The label can disclose
Fish oil mass, total omega-3, EPA, DHA, source, form, serving size, blend structure, directions, and quality claims.
The label cannot prove
Measured fatty-acid content, freshness, oxidation status, contaminants, absorption, clinical benefit, or personal suitability.
A laboratory report may add
Lot-specific identity, fatty-acid assay, peroxide and anisidine results, contaminants, purity, and stability data.
A human trial must establish
Whether the exact preparation changes a defined biomarker or health outcome in a relevant population.

What is the difference between fish oil and omega-3?

Fish oil is a source material that can contain several fatty acids. Omega-3 describes a family of fatty acids. On a fish oil label, EPA and DHA are the main long-chain omega-3 amounts to compare, while the total oil mass includes more than those two actives.

Why should I count EPA and DHA instead of 1,000 mg fish oil?

Because 1,000 mg fish oil describes the oil material, not a fixed EPA or DHA dose. One product might disclose 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, while a more concentrated serving with the same oil weight could disclose much more. Use the separately listed EPA and DHA amounts.

Is total omega-3 the same as EPA plus DHA?

Not always. Total omega-3 can include EPA, DHA, DPA, and other omega-3 fatty acids. If EPA and DHA are listed, add them for the combined EPA plus DHA amount and do not add total omega-3 on top of them.

What do TG, rTG, and EE mean on fish oil labels?

TG means triglyceride, rTG means re-esterified triglyceride, and EE means ethyl ester. They describe how the fatty acids are carried. Form can affect absorption under specific conditions, but it does not replace the EPA and DHA dose, quality evidence, or product-specific human outcomes.

Is ethyl ester fish oil a bad form?

No. Ethyl ester is a legitimate concentrated omega-3 form and is used in prescription products. Other forms can have somewhat higher bioavailability in some comparisons, but a transparent EE product should be judged by its EPA and DHA, serving, evidence, quality, and use context rather than dismissed by the acronym alone.

Is krill oil better than fish oil?

Not automatically. Krill oil often contains phospholipid-associated omega-3s, but EPA and DHA amounts can be modest. Compare the actual EPA and DHA per serving, source, allergen context, quality evidence, capsule count, and cost instead of assuming one source is universally superior.

Is algal oil a useful alternative to fish oil?

Algal oil can provide DHA and, in some products, EPA without a fish source. Compare its disclosed EPA and DHA just as you would on fish oil. Algal source wording does not by itself prove a larger dose, better absorption, purity, or suitability for every person.

Is plant-based ALA the same as EPA and DHA?

No. ALA is an essential omega-3 found in flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and some plant oils. The body can convert some ALA to EPA and DHA, but conversion is limited, so labeled ALA milligrams should not be relabeled as an equivalent EPA plus DHA amount.

Do fishy burps mean the oil is rancid?

Confirm what any certification covers and follow the product’s storage instructions. A broad purity claim or logo without traceable results is weaker evidence.

How much EPA and DHA should I take?

There is no single supplement dose for every person or goal. General nutrition, pregnancy, clinician-directed triglyceride treatment, and cardiovascular secondary prevention are different contexts. Do not turn a prescription trial dose or a population safety level into a universal self-supplementation target.
