Sulforaphane Supplements: Evidence, Forms, Dose, and Myrosinase
Sulforaphane labels can describe very different products. This guide explains the difference between direct Sulforaphane and glucoraphanin, why myrosinase matters for conversion, what human studies actually show, and which label claims deserve skepticism.
Related label terms: direct or stabilized Sulforaphane; glucoraphanin, also called Sulforaphane glucosinolate; broccoli sprout or seed extract; myrosinase; and Sulforaphane potential. These terms do not describe the same material or the same active amount.
Ingredient overview
Sulforaphane is the product of a conversion, not another name for glucoraphanin
Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate associated with broccoli, broccoli sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables. The plant material commonly contains glucoraphanin, a glucosinolate precursor. When plant tissue is broken, the enzyme myrosinase can convert glucoraphanin into Sulforaphane.
Young broccoli sprouts can contain far more glucoraphanin than mature broccoli, but that finding is often retold incorrectly as a guaranteed Sulforaphane amount. Precursor content, conversion, and absorbed Sulforaphane are related measurements, not the same measurement. 1
One word can change what the milligrams mean
Ten milligrams of directly declared Sulforaphane is not the same disclosure as ten milligrams of glucoraphanin, broccoli powder, or broccoli extract. A precursor amount is not an active Sulforaphane amount unless the label separately declares a yield.
Product forms
Three label formats describe different delivery problems
Keep the active amount and precursor amount separate
- Direct or stabilized Sulforaphane
- The label declares Sulforaphane itself, ideally with an amount per listed serving. Stability remains a finished-product quality question that the label alone cannot prove.
- Glucoraphanin with myrosinase
- The precursor and conversion enzyme are both disclosed. Human studies show that active plant myrosinase can increase Sulforaphane bioavailability, but its presence does not make conversion complete or identical across products and people. 3 A 2026 randomized crossover study in 16 healthy adults found substantially higher Sulforaphane metabolite exposure when a glucoraphanin-rich broccoli seed extract was consumed with a myrosinase-containing mustard seed preparation than when the same extract was consumed without added myrosinase. Because this was a small, single-dose study of specific preparations, it supports the importance of myrosinase for conversion rather than proving that every myrosinase-containing supplement performs equally. 12
- Glucoraphanin without active myrosinase
- Conversion depends more heavily on other sources of myrosinase or gut microbial activity and can be variable. The glucoraphanin milligrams should not be presented as if they were milligrams of absorbed Sulforaphane.
A fourth common presentation is a broccoli seed or sprout extract standardized to a stated Sulforaphane percentage. That label can disclose both the extract mass and the calculated Sulforaphane amount. The calculation is useful label arithmetic, but it is not independent confirmation of stability, conversion, or the content of the finished batch. Human evidence
Nrf2 biology is established, but the clinical claim still has to match the study
Sulforaphane is widely studied as an activator of the Nrf2 cellular-response pathway. Laboratory work helped establish how compounds can modify Keap1, a regulator that normally restrains Nrf2. This supports the mechanism, but it does not make Sulforaphane a genetic switch for longevity or prove that a supplement prevents disease. 2
A 12-week randomized trial in 291 adults exposed to substantial air pollution tested a specific broccoli sprout beverage. It increased urinary excretion of measured benzene and acrolein metabolites compared with placebo. The study measured defined exposure biomarkers from one beverage; it did not show that a capsule performs a general cleanse or removes every toxin. 5
Delivery format matters even when two preparations are intended to provide comparable Sulforaphane equivalents. In a small human feeding study, fresh sprouts produced about three times higher plasma and urinary Sulforaphane metabolite levels than the tested myrosinase-treated extract. That result belongs to those tested preparations and should not be turned into a rule that every sprout is better than every supplement. 4
Claim review
Promising research is not the same as a treatment claim
Sulforaphane is not established as a cancer treatment. Research on cellular defenses, carcinogen metabolism, or prevention biomarkers does not show that a retail supplement treats an existing cancer. Anyone receiving cancer treatment should have a supplement reviewed by the oncology team rather than using a mechanism claim as medication clearance.
Sulforaphane has also been studied in autism spectrum disorder, but the clinical findings are mixed. A 2014 randomized trial in 44 young males reported improvements on several behavioral measures, while a later randomized trial in children did not find a significant treatment effect on its primary clinical outcome. A larger trial involving 108 children found improvement on clinician-rated measures but not on caregiver-rated scales. These studies used specific preparations and protocols and do not establish Sulforaphane as an autism treatment or predict whether an individual will benefit. 6, 10, 11
“Detox” needs a named exposure and a measured outcome
Nrf2 activation and higher excretion of selected metabolites are not proof that a person is detoxing. Claims about odors, headaches, fatigue, or other symptoms being evidence of toxin removal are not established by these trials.
Label reading
A useful label shows what is present, not only what might be produced
Six details that make the comparison more honest
- Named material
- Identify direct Sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, or a general broccoli powder or extract.
- Amount per listed serving
- Check which ingredient owns the printed milligrams and how many capsules make one serving.
- Myrosinase disclosure
- Look for an explicit enzyme source or activity claim when the formula relies on precursor conversion.
- Declared Sulforaphane yield
- A stated yield is more informative than “Sulforaphane potential” without a number or test basis.
- Standardization basis
- Confirm whether a percentage refers to Sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, total glucosinolates, or another marker.
- Blend transparency
- A total proprietary blend weight does not disclose the individual Sulforaphane, precursor, or enzyme amount.
Terms such as “activated,” “high potency,” “Nrf2 support,” and “broccoli complex” do not replace a named material and amount. A trademark can help identify a preparation, but it is not proof that every marketing claim has been demonstrated in the finished consumer product.
Label comparison
Four labels can use broccoli language while disclosing different active amounts
Sulforaphane, 10 mg per serving
The active compound and amount are directly stated. The label is clearer than a precursor-only claim, but it still cannot prove stability, actual finished-batch content, or personal benefit.
Broccoli sprout extract, 500 mg, standardized to 0.4% Sulforaphane
The label arithmetic gives 2 mg of declared Sulforaphane because 0.4% of 500 mg is 2 mg. The 500 mg extract mass should not be compared with 500 mg of Sulforaphane.
Glucoraphanin, 30 mg, with myrosinase
The precursor and enzyme are both visible, which is useful formulation context. Without a separate declared yield, the label still does not state how many milligrams of Sulforaphane the serving will produce or a person will absorb.
Organic broccoli powder, 500 mg
This states a food-derived powder amount, not a Sulforaphane dose. The label does not disclose glucoraphanin, active myrosinase, conversion yield, or direct Sulforaphane.

Dose and food context
There is no single milligram target across active Sulforaphane and precursor products
Human studies have used different preparations, including fresh sprouts, glucoraphanin-rich beverages, precursor plus myrosinase, and directly delivered Sulforaphane. The printed dose only makes sense when it remains attached to the tested material, serving basis, and outcome. A glucoraphanin dose cannot be copied into a direct Sulforaphane comparison as if conversion were complete.
Cutting or chewing raw cruciferous vegetables brings precursor and plant myrosinase together. Heating can reduce myrosinase activity, but cooked broccoli is not therefore worthless or guaranteed to produce zero Sulforaphane. Human work shows that conversion can still occur without active plant enzyme, though it is generally lower and more variable. 3 8
More broccoli milligrams do not guarantee more Sulforaphane
Plant source, precursor concentration, enzyme activity, processing, formulation, storage, serving basis, and individual conversion can all change the result. The front-of-pack number rarely tells that complete story.
Safety and medical limits
Short studies do not establish a universal long-term upper limit
Gastrointestinal adverse effects can occur with concentrated Sulforaphane preparations. In a seven-day randomized phase 1 study of the stabilized pharmaceutical formulation SFX-01 in healthy men, gastrointestinal events were common and were mostly mild. Because the study was short and tested one specific formulation, it does not establish a general side-effect rate, long-term safety, or a universal upper intake limit for Sulforaphane supplements. 9
A 12-week randomized study in 45 women found no measured adverse effect on thyroid-stimulating hormone, free thyroxine, thyroglobulin, or thyroid autoimmunity from the tested broccoli sprout beverage. That is reassuring for that protocol, but it does not prove that every extract, high dose, or long-term use is risk-free, and it does not justify self-prescribing iodine or selenium. 7
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood use, active cancer treatment, thyroid disease, gastrointestinal conditions, and prescription medicine use deserve individual review by a clinician or pharmacist. A supplement label cannot provide complete interaction screening or decide personal suitability.
Label versus laboratory
Clear conversion wording is useful, but it is not physical verification
A label can disclose a direct Sulforaphane amount, glucoraphanin, a myrosinase source, extract mass, standardization percentage, expected yield, serving size, and blend structure. Those details make comparisons more precise.
The label alone cannot verify active myrosinase, actual conversion, Sulforaphane stability, finished-batch content, botanical identity, purity, contaminants, or storage quality. It also cannot prove a clinical outcome or determine whether the product is appropriate for one person.

What is Sulforaphane?
Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate associated with broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables. It can be formed when the enzyme myrosinase converts the glucoraphanin precursor into Sulforaphane.
Is glucoraphanin the same as Sulforaphane?
No. Glucoraphanin is a precursor that can be converted into Sulforaphane. A label’s glucoraphanin amount is not a directly declared Sulforaphane amount, and conversion is not complete or identical across products and people.
Why does myrosinase matter?
Myrosinase catalyzes the conversion of glucoraphanin into Sulforaphane. Human studies show that active plant myrosinase can increase Sulforaphane bioavailability, but naming the enzyme does not guarantee complete conversion, a specific yield, or the same absorption for every user.
Does broccoli sprout extract guarantee a Sulforaphane dose?
No. Broccoli sprout extract can provide glucoraphanin, direct Sulforaphane, or both, depending on the preparation. Look for the named material, amount per serving, myrosinase wording, and any explicit standardization or Sulforaphane yield.
What does Sulforaphane potential mean?
It usually refers to an expected amount that could be formed from a precursor under stated conditions. It is more useful when the label gives a number and explains the conversion basis, but it is still not proof of actual absorption or finished-batch content.
Does Sulforaphane detox the body?
A specific broccoli sprout beverage increased urinary excretion of measured benzene and acrolein metabolites in a randomized trial. That does not establish a general cleanse, removal of every toxin, or the idea that unpleasant symptoms prove detoxification.
Does Sulforaphane treat autism or cancer?
Sulforaphane is not established as a treatment for autism or cancer. Autism trials have produced mixed results: some studies reported improvements on selected behavioral measures, while others did not show a significant effect on their primary outcomes. The studies used specific preparations and populations and do not establish that a retail Sulforaphane supplement will provide clinical benefit. Cancer research is largely focused on mechanisms, biomarkers, prevention, or investigational therapeutic use rather than evidence that an over-the-counter supplement treats existing cancer.
What is a typical Sulforaphane dose?
There is no single dose that applies across direct Sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, sprouts, extracts, and blends. Compare a number only with the same material, serving basis, delivery method, and evidence context, and do not assume precursor milligrams equal active Sulforaphane milligrams.
Is Sulforaphane safe for the thyroid?
A 12-week study of one broccoli sprout beverage found no measured adverse effect on thyroid hormones or thyroid autoimmunity in 45 women. That is product-specific reassurance, not proof that every dose, extract, or long-term use is risk-free. Thyroid disease should be discussed with a clinician.
