Potassium: Forms, Amounts, and Label Guide

Potassium appears in electrolyte powders, multivitamins, single-mineral products, and potassium-based salt substitutes. The useful label checks are the elemental potassium per full serving, percent Daily Value, source compound, repeated servings, and whether kidney function or medicines change the safety context.

Also listed as: potassium. It may be supplied by potassium chloride, potassium citrate, tripotassium citrate, potassium gluconate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium phosphate, potassium aspartate, potassium alpha-ketoglutarate, or another disclosed source.

Potassium is an essential intracellular electrolyte

Potassium is the most abundant positively charged ion inside cells. It helps maintain intracellular fluid volume and electrochemical gradients across cell membranes, which support normal nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and cell function. 3

These established roles explain why potassium is necessary. They do not show that every user needs a potassium supplement, that a higher amount is always better, or that a product will improve hydration, blood pressure, cramps, or performance.

Food and supplement labels answer different questions

Potassium is widely available in foods, including fruit, vegetables, legumes, potatoes, dairy foods, fish, meat, and nuts. Many supplement servings provide only a small fraction of a day’s total intake. A product label is therefore useful for comparing the disclosed supplement contribution, not for determining a person’s complete potassium intake or status. 3

A real nutrient role is not proof of every electrolyte claim

Normal cell function

Potassium’s role in intracellular fluid balance and membrane gradients is well established. That physiology does not establish a benefit from adding an arbitrary supplement dose. 3

Blood-pressure context

Potassium supplementation has reduced blood pressure on average in trials, particularly in adults with hypertension, but the National Academies found the evidence insufficient to establish a potassium Chronic Disease Risk Reduction Intake. 4

Hydration and electrolytes

Potassium can be one part of an electrolyte formula. The amount of potassium, sodium, chloride, carbohydrate, and fluid used matters more than the number of minerals named on the front label.

Cramps and performance

Potassium is required for normal muscle function, but that pathway does not prove a universal anti-cramp or performance effect. A label cannot identify the cause of cramping or establish a personal need.

First identify whether the number belongs to potassium or its source compound

On a US Supplement Facts panel, a line such as “Potassium 99 mg (as potassium gluconate)” declares 99 mg of elemental potassium. Potassium gluconate identifies the source. The 99 mg should not be converted again. 3

A separate line that states only “Potassium chloride 1,000 mg” is different because the number belongs to the whole compound. Based on molecular mass, potassium makes up about 52.4% of potassium chloride, so 1,000 mg of potassium chloride contains about 524 mg of potassium. 5

What common potassium form lines establish

Potassium, as potassium chloride
The stated Potassium amount is elemental potassium. Chloride is the source counterion and may also appear as its own nutrient row.
Potassium, as potassium citrate
The elemental amount is clear when Potassium milligrams are stated. The citrate name does not by itself prove better absorption or a better outcome.
Potassium, as potassium gluconate
The declared Potassium amount is the comparison number. Current evidence does not establish one common supplemental form as universally superior.
Potassium citrate or gluconate compound weight only
A precise elemental conversion can depend on the exact chemical and hydration form. Prefer a directly declared Potassium amount rather than assuming a fixed percentage.
Potassium iodide in micrograms
This commonly supplies iodine, not a meaningful potassium dose. Read the Iodine row and microgram unit rather than categorizing it as a potassium supplement.

A familiar 99 mg serving is only about 2% Daily Value

The current FDA Daily Value for potassium is 4,700 mg for adults and children age 4 and older. A serving with 99 mg is about 2% Daily Value, while 200 mg is about 4% Daily Value after rounding. Percent Daily Value is a label-comparison tool, not a personalized target or safety ceiling. 1, 2

Many supplement manufacturers limit a serving to 99 mg because of historical safety and warning issues involving certain potassium-containing drugs. It is not accurate to describe 99 mg as a universal federal cap for every dietary supplement. 3

The number belongs to the whole compound. It corresponds to about 524 mg of potassium, not 1,000 mg of potassium.
Potassium citrate, 1,000 mg
This discloses a compound weight. Without the exact chemical form or a separate Potassium line, do not assume that all 1,000 mg is elemental potassium.
Proprietary Electrolyte Blend, 2,000 mg

Keep the elemental amount separate from the source compound

Start with the full serving, then distinguish a directly declared Potassium amount from the weight of potassium chloride, citrate, gluconate, or a proprietary electrolyte blend. Keep sodium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, carbohydrate, and other formula components as separate disclosures rather than combining them into one electrolyte number.

A capsule, hydration powder, and salt substitute can create very different exposures

What the labels establish
The products disclose different potassium amounts and serving patterns. Compare actual servings and clearly declared elemental amounts first; diet, kidney function, medicines, and personal suitability require additional context beyond the labels.

Daily Value, Adequate Intake, and upper-limit status answer different questions

The FDA Daily Value is used for label percentages. The National Academies set adult Adequate Intakes of 3,400 mg per day for men and 2,600 mg per day for women age 19 and older. These AIs cover total intake from food, beverages, and supplements and are not default supplement doses. 1, 4

Potassium has no established Chronic Disease Risk Reduction Intake and no established Tolerable Upper Intake Level for apparently healthy people. The absence of a UL does not mean unlimited intake is safe, especially when potassium excretion is impaired. 4

The same label amount can carry a different risk in a different user

Healthy kidneys usually excrete excess potassium. Chronic kidney disease and other conditions that impair potassium excretion can make supplemental potassium or potassium-based salt substitutes dangerous because blood potassium can rise too high. 3, 4

ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and potassium-sparing diuretics can reduce potassium excretion. Loop and thiazide diuretics can increase potassium loss, but that does not make unsupervised replacement automatically appropriate. The medicine, laboratory results, diet, and full product all matter. 3

Very high supplemental amounts or potassium-based salt substitutes can cause acute hyperkalemia. Concentrated potassium salts in some oral drug products have also been associated with gastrointestinal lesions. A small capsule and a heavily used salt substitute should not be treated as equivalent exposures. 3
